Do it. Declare that the citizens of these states will no longer be required to send tax money to the federal government. If the Supreme Court says it’s unconstitutional, ignore them. The federal gov loses a lot of its enforcement mechanisms if states don’t help out in some way. Even combined, the regular military, the National Guard, and ICE don’t have enough personnel to occupy California. They don’t even have enough for Minnesota. They might have enough for Vermont.
They might have to increase their own taxes to pay for things, but it’s probably less than the federal government takes. You can win over a lot of Republican voters in the rural areas with lower taxes.
They might have to increase their own taxes to pay for things
The blue states are mostly sending more to the feds than they get back.
They’re not going to replace, say, Medicare without raising taxes, and they need some kind of self-defense force, too. In the end, they can probably pay less for better services, but they can’t replace everything the federal gov does without some kind of tax increase.
Canadians have healhcare and - typically - 1% less taxes for most earners. Replacing the vaaaaastly overpriced healthcare system in America with anything else is a net savings.
We also probably don’t need to outspend the next dozen or so countries combined for defense.
Things are almost far enough along that some red states might even join such a group.
If they know where their subsidies come from they will.
Keep them at several arm lengths though, can’t trust them after how they ushered this upon us all
True but quite a few states are super close swing states so I see 11-16 more flipping way more blue after this
Texas Republicans are just waiting to invade blue states
They can fuck off. Welfare state losers that already poisoned the country. They can eat gruel and stay poor.
…or their own country, with it’s own constitutional adjustments… It’s own president, military, and the offer to pay people to move there. When you get more people than the USA, start calling yourself the USA.
…say you’ll only rejoin the union of there’s a snap election with new oversight rules, have th UN or NATO involved to prevent cheating.
I think it’s worth starting with “here are some fixes that our group of states think should be implemented”
This a very serious matter that they should really consider implementing.
It’s a nice pipe dream.
with that attitude it will definitely stay one.
The number of defeatists on Lemmy is insane.
The biggest thing is getting together in real-time online 3rd space community groups on Stoat, and Matrix/Element then getting things done together
That’s the biggest thing that will change a lot. Groups per city, town, state, and one for country overall. So everyone can educate, inspire, inform, do projects together to get things done now, discuss, help, etc etc
That’s the biggest equalizer that needs to happen now
yeah i’m telling you, anarchist internet spaces like the fediverse are essential for anarchy in real life; and the people’s self-determination largely relies on anarchy (i.e. forming your own community), i believe
Interesting idea. Sometimes it’s easier to act and come up with something first, then ask other people to join later.
Alright everyone the biggest thing that will change literally everything for the better is getting together in real-time online 3rd space community groups on Stoat, and Matrix/Element then getting things done together
Hope is the best thing to have in this moment. Also read this: https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/hope-key-in-meaningful-life
That’s the biggest thing that will change a lot. Online Groups per city, town, state, and one for country overall. So everyone can educate, inspire, inform, do projects together to get things done now, discuss, help, etc etc. Online affecting in-person, and in-person affecting online
That’s the biggest equalizer that needs to happen now. Would you rather roll over in defeat from doing nothing or doing something worthwhile
You’re right about the need to organize locally, but I don’t think it applies in this context, given local movements can realistically impact state and federal politics at a slow pace at the best of times (which is usually ok–they’re local organizations, after all).
It’s frustrating to find a lack of mechanisms to affect URGENT change to the federal government without the benefit of time, legal consistency, privacy, powerful allies, money and resources, (I could go on for ages).
