Samsung Statement to Android Authority:
Samsung is committed to innovation and enhancing every day value for our home appliance customers. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen that value, we are conducting a pilot program to offer promotions and curated advertisements on certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerator models in the U.S. market.
As a part of this pilot program, Family Hub refrigerators in the U.S. will receive an over-the-network (OTN) software update with Terms of Service (T&C) and Privacy Notice (PN). Advertising will appear on certain Family Hub refrigerator Cover Screens. The Cover Screen appears when a Family Hub screen is idle. Ad design format may change depending on Family Hub personalization options for the Cover Screen, and advertising will not appear when Cover Screen displays Art Mode or picture albums.
Advertisements can be dismissed on the Cover Screens where ads are shown, meaning that specific ads will not appear again during the campaign period.
“Thats what you get” comments aren’t helpful or productive. Don’t demonize the customer, demonize Samsung in this case. It’s not the customers fault… I highly doubt it said “Advertisements coming soon” om the box when they bought it.
I argue it IS customer’s fault. To let Samsung be able to enshittify this much and still stand on the market.
In my opinion, we can’t blame the customer because they don’t actually sign up for this treatment. Samsung (in this case) didnt tell these people “yeah, there will be ads soon”, no, they bought this product and THEN the ads came.
This happens with a lot of things, they get you in then close the doors and trap you in.
Not everyone knows this happens, so I think we that do should be doing everything we can to stop it, otherwise we will end up with every fridge being a “smart fridge” and we in the know won’t have a choice but to buy one.
Edit: i agree with you to a certain extent and I wish people would think before buying and research brands, etc.
Smart fridges arent helpful either. Its gimmicky bs from tech giants. The same tech giants that inject ads into everything they can for past 20 years. Genuinely, what did you people expect??
Im not trying to be helpful or productive. Obviously. Im making fun of people for buying dumb shit.
Feel free to make fun of ppl, but I hope you realise that these type of comments that ridicule the customers just leave the companies out of the fire and let them continue doing this to us.
Not everyone is technically inclined or educated on this type of stuff, not really their fault that these companies prey on them with this stuff.
Samsung is pretty known to be a shit ass company. You can spend your money how you like, but dont be surprised when someone laughs at you for buying shitty overpriced stuff
Im not sure that they are to the general public.
Edit: I dont think most people know much about the brands they support or use
Or maybe its your job to educate the masses! Go forth, noble knight. Spend your days shouting into the ignorant void
Thats the plan, though I think the void is starting to listen. The other option of do nothing is better in your eyes?
Im not doing nothing. Im laughing at them and enjoying myself quite a bit actually. Id be happy to teach them to degoogle and stuff when they make that decision, but it is not my job to convince them to do so. Its yours apparently
Then they will keep buying crap. Most people dont care and never will and i will continue to get shadenfreude from their ignorance when their overpriced garbage breaks. Nothing people like us can say will convince them. People like that have to learn their own lessons.
Laughing at people won’t help change their minds, it will likely make them reinforce their decisions out of anger etc. So i think you are doing it wrong.
People won’t learn on their own, either we help and things get better (because ppl stop buying this type of garbage) or we laugh and they keep buying poopy for vengeance.
Again, im not trying to change their minds lmao.
Been down that road with many family and friends. They will decide what they will decide whether or not i try to tell them these companies suck.
You don’t have to change anyones mind, I just think laughing at people who aren’t really in the wrong is going to ruin any chance of us as consumers getting more knowledgeable on this stuff, which will lead us down the path of brands doing whatever, which should be the opposite of what you want. So laughing in peoples faces isn’t doing you any good, that’s probably why your family and friends dont listen to you.
A gentle nudge in the right direction is all people need, not being laughed at and mocked.
