          I remember Isis first started as a combination of Iraqi nationalism and the Sunni tribes fighting back against the Shia oppression (which was powered by the Americans). Many tribe leaders saw this as the best option they had for their peoples. But they were not comfortable and worried about things going wrong.

          Among the first leaders were Iraqi generals, officers and statesmen who were evicted. It provided government and structure while making good usage of taxes.

          The first iteration of that changed with the killing of the leaders and massacres of hundreds of thousands of civilians, mostly by the Americans.

          And today the movement is different, more like an international movement many can subscribe to and claim membership.

          They are probably the best bad guy the Washington PR team dreamed up. And if they did not exist the Americans,Turks, Gulf States and many others would have to invent them.
