Yesterday, Stephen Miller delivered a eulogy for Charlie Kirk that served as a battle cry for the Trump administrationās state-sponsored war on his perceived foesāa war for which Miller is the primary strategist. The speech was a jarring piece of rhetoric. It is a perfect encapsulation of the ethos of Trumpism, boiling away the presidentās idiosyncratic habits of mixing insult comedy and weird digressions into his rhetoric and leaving, in Millerās tongue, the residue of pure ideology and will to power.
Millerās theme was that President Donald Trumpās side embodies pure good, his opponents pure evil, and the former is destined to utterly destroy the latter. Republicans have never stopped complaining that Hillary Clinton once described a portion of Trumpās base as āa basket of deplorables.ā Yet over the weekend the presidentās most powerful adviser depicted half the country as worthless, irredeemably wicked, and fated for destruction.
"We are the storm. And our enemies cannot comprehend our strength, our determination, our resolve, our passion,ā he thundered. āOur lineage and our legacy hails back to Athens, to Rome, to Philadelphia, to Monticello. Our ancestors built the cities. They produced the art and architecture. They built the industry.ā
Miller taunted his opponents, āYou have no idea the dragon you have awakened.ā To the contrary, his targets seem very aware of the administrationās instinct to take revenge. But given Millerās past statements, I question the premise that Kirkās murder āawakenedā Millerās desire to crush the rightās enemies. It seems to have merely provided a convenient pretext.
Thatās not the narrative, tho. The story goes, the shooter was radicalized by the left and his trans partner while in a liberal college.
None of its true, but if you whistle it loud enough, you can find the other people around you willing to use it as a justification for violence against minorities.
Thereās really no one in the admin more dislikable than him.
Thatās saying a lot.
What I heard of it all sounded like projection.
